The 12 Best Performances of 2016 so far . . .

With all the mid-year film summaries floating around the blogosphere at the moment, I thought that I’d pitch in and highlight some of the best performances of the year so far, the idea for which I’ve “borrowed” from an article I read earlier.

So I’m going to pick the best performance from each of the 12 films I’ve seen in the cinema this year, in chronological order so I won’t spoil the surprise when I do my final rankings in the big summary at the end of the year.

Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens – I think it has to be Adam Driver, though Daisy Ridley and John Boyega are awesome too.

The Hateful Eight – Jennifer Jason Leigh

Room – Brie Larson

The Revenant – Great central performances by Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy, but I’m actually going to go for Will Poulter

Deadpool – Ryan Reynolds, but I loved Morena Baccarin as well.

Hail Caesar! – Well, Josh Brolin is a strong lead and Channing Tatum is surprisingly good, given that I don’t really rate him as an actor, but it has to be Alden Ehrenreich – “would that it were so simple!”

The Witch – Anya Taylor-Joy

Midnight Special – Joel Edgerton, though Michael Shannon and Adam Driver (again!) are great too.

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice – It’s a two horse race between Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot, but it has to be Ben Affleck, given that he defied all expectations and was actually one of the best things about it all.

Captain America: Civil War – Tom Holland, obviously! Though Chadwick Bozeman is a close second.

X-Men: Apocalypse – I’ll go for Kodi Smit-McPhee, though Evan Peters was awesome as expected.

The Nice Guys – Angourie Rice, though Ryan Gosling is amazing too.

A relatively short list perhaps, but I’m hoping that loads more great films start showing in the cinema soon. On the agenda: Star Trek Beyond and Suicide Squad!

Any other awesome performances that I’ve missed?

  1. Most of these I haven’t seen, but I agree Alden Ehrenreich is utterly fab in “Hail Caesar!”.

I liked what previous commenters said about John Goodman in “Cloverfield 10”. I thought everyone was great in that, but I’d like to cast another vote for Mr Goodman.

  2. Love this list! Nice to see some love for Adam Driver too. I’d have included John Goodman in 10 Cloverfield Lane, but with all those other performances I don’t know who I’d remove to make room.
